At night the amado are used to protect a building from thieves. They are also used during storms and to protect the interior from rain, wind, and snow.
Amado are stored in a special box at the end of a building, where they can slide out and be set in place. They rest on a track. The doors, when all set out around the building, can be locked in place with a variety of methods.
It is said that amado first appeared during the 16th century. They can be found in minka, temples, shrines, and mansions.
