Uguisubari (鴬張り or 鶯張り) are wooden floors that rub together and produce a squeeky chirping sound when walked upon. They are used in the hallways of some shrines, temples, and palaces.
These floors, when dry, naturally produce this sound, however from the early 1800s onward, the floors were built in such a way that the floors would squeek whenever put under pressure, regardless if they are dry or not. This allowed the floors to act as a security device, preventing someone's passage to ever go unnoticed.
